What’s Blooming in Blairstown
September 2024
WHAT’S HAPPENING NOW
Barn Swallows!
Here at Little Big Farm we consider these birds part of the crew! As an organic farm we have lots of insects and these baby barn swallows do an incredible job eating insects. This nest was located in our workshop area near the cooler, so they had to be pretty tolerant of our coming and going. We were so happy to see them all successfully fly out into the big world. They still visit us and sing to us and eat those flies and mosquitoes! Recently, I read a great book by the author Doug Tallamy called “Nature’s Best Hope,” that talks about the importance of native plants, birds, insects and our connection to them. I absolutely loved this book and if you love nature you probably will too. Check it out so we can discuss native plants next time you pick up your flowers!
ABOUT TO BLOOM
Autumn Flowers are Here!
We are growing all sorts of great flowers this fall including our staples of hydrangea, sunflowers and dahlias. This year we also added marigolds, helenium and amaranthus to our mix. You can find these flowers at our farm stand and in our Flower Club bouquets and buckets. Our farm stand is open every weekend May - October. Our hours are Friday 3-7pm Sat & Sun 10am - 7pm. Below is the link to our facebook page for regular updates.
GARDENING TIP
Fall is the time to plant your bulbs
Every fall we plant more bulbs here at the farm. This year we are planting 6,000 tulips! Pro tip…. dig a big hole and put 8-10 bulbs in one hole for a fuller look around the garden. We plant ours around Halloween every year. Of course, the deer do like the tulips, so if you have problems with deer, consider daffodils or some of the more unusual bulbs like Allium. The deer will not touch them and they are pretty stunning too.
See you at the farm!
