What’s Blooming in Blairstown

March 2023

Hello there!

After 16 years of flower farming here in Blairstown, we wanted to start a new tradition of sharing short monthly notes about what’s blooming on Little Big Farm.

For more information on the flowers we grow, “Flower Club Subscriptions,” or our “Sip and Snip Workshops,” please visit our newly updated Little Big Farm Website.

Happy Spring!

WHAT’S HAPPENING NOW? SEED STARTING!

Every year we start thousands of seeds. But we have a secret…. we start them in our dining room! It has been the best decision ever! Rather than heating a greenhouse during the coldest time of the year, we use our home, which already has the heat on. Given the cost of fuel these days, this is the best option based on our available resources.

This type of “out of the box” thinking is one of my favorite aspects about farming overall. Using our resources wisely helps us to keep costs low and minimize our carbon footprint.

Special Bonus – I get to “farm” in the middle of winter while drinking tea inside my cozy home.

ABOUT TO BLOOM. 6,000 TULIPS!

These are not your grocery store tulips… this year we are growing 24 unique varieties! We will have tulips of all different colors and types, including double peony types, parrots and fringe varieties. The colors and types will change every week as new flowers open and bloom.

If you would like to have these tulips on your table starting next month, our Tulip Shares start April 21st and can be purchased through May 12th. Each share provides you with a bucket of 15-20 tulips each week for four consecutive weeks.

Tulip shares also make great gifts, so don’t forget Mother’s Day is May 14th!

LOOKING LOVELY

Flower Fact: Tulips will continue to grow and reach towards the light even after they are cut. As a result, your arrangement will look a little different every day as the flowers continue to lengthen and open for you. They create a dramatic show that will easily last a week or more on your table.

See you in the spring!

We hope this note from the farm brought a little spring into your winter step!
